Tutors and mentors form a supportive, writing-based, one-on-one relationship with a Mighty Writers participant in grades four through twelve. Mentorships meet for 60-90 minutes one evening a week for at least six months.
Qualifications

High school diploma, four-year college degree highly preferred;

Basic editorial skills and understanding of the writing process;

Sincere desire to create a relationship with a young person to help them accomplish their personal, creative, and academic goals;

Ability to communicate with youth and teenagers openly and non-judgmentally;

Ability to establish a relationship based on mutual responsibility and respect;

Practical problem-solving skills and the ability to suggest options and alternatives; and
-
Ability to maintain clear professional boundaries when providing social and emotional support.
Responsibilities

Attend a mentor orientation and interview with site staff before meeting mentee;

Participate in group mentoring mixer events, site-specific and organization-wide;

Maintain a minimum six-month commitment to one student, meeting weekly;

Submit monthly mentor reports and other documentation as requested by MW staff;

Sign in every time you enter Mighty Writers and sign out when you leave. When meeting off-site, dates and locations must be documented and pre-approved by parent/guardian;

Establish a relationship that helps your mentee set and accomplish personal goals, with a focus on developing the mentee’s writing skills and personal voice;

Praise your mentee’s progress at every meeting, and offer constructive criticism when appropriate and beneficial to student’s goals;

Support mentee in solving school-related problems that may interfere with mentee’s success at Mighty Writers or in other important areas of life;

Integrate at least one short-term writing project per month in line with clear monthly goals, OR complete two longer assignments per year to submit for publishing (personalized prompts and publishing sources available upon request).

Save all mentee writing, take and share photos often; and
-
Maintain open and timely communication with the mentee and guardians regarding contact info and schedule changes.
