Description

A couple of Saturdays each month, Drexel Urban Growers (DUG) hosts open garden hours from 12-2pm (10am-12pm during summer) at our garden located on the corner of 35th & Spring Garden streets. Anyone can come hang out in the garden, help with any garden maintenance tasks we have to do (such as weeding, tilling, watering, turning compost, etc), and learn more about how to garden! Everyone is welcome to come by; this event is NOT limited to Drexel students.

You don't need any previous experience to come to open garden hours, and you don't even have to garden while you're there to come through! Bring friends, a picnic, art supplies, a good book to read, a blanket to lay out on, or anything else you want for enjoying your Saturday afternoon :) We garden in a beautiful space around a large, open, grassy area surrounded by flowering trees--perfect for a break from all the concrete. Also, you don't need to stay for the whole time and you can show up whenever.

On certain days, we'll have optional activities such as kitchen scrap gardening, pot decorating, bird-scarer making, and making art. We're also working to get breakfast and lunch options for our garden hours--stay tuned for details. If you have activities you'd like to see us put on, let us know!

Whenever we have vegetables to harvest (likely starting in early June, we'll be giving out free produce (most immediately: lettuces, cabbages, collard greens, onions, carrots, radishes, and turnips) to anyone who wants it, so come for the free veggies and stay for the company! All produce we don't hand out directly we bring to the Powelton Community Fridge @ 37th & Lancaster Ave.

If you plan on gardening, please bring water (also sunscreen and a snack if you'd like) and fill out this waiver: https://drexel.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_bfk34yAiEO267P0. We recommend closed-toed shoes when doing maintenance, but if you want to frolic barefoot in the grass, we sure won't stop you.
