Volunteer: Administration Internship

Counties Served: Bucks, Montgomery, and Philadelphia.  

Hospice care is for people who have a life expectancy of six months or less and have chosen to focus on palliative care and comfort. Hospice care affirms the belief that it is important to make every moment of life as meaningful as possible services to manage pain, relieve symptoms, give emotional, and spiritual support. Visits are made to patient reside location; long team care, facility, assisted living, or the patient home.

Eligible patients are provided services according to the State of PA for Hospice Services regardless of income, race, ethnic background, gender, or sexual or orientation.  

Administration Intern Learning Objectives:

Develop an understanding of hospice philosophy, goals, ethics, services, and concept of palliative care. Understand HCHB-Medical electronic charting system. Learn and understand the HIPPA regulations, the role of confidentiality, Patient Bill of Right, Ethical Standards, and Practices.

Intern Opportunities:

Learn HCHB-Medical Electronic Chart Assist with Veteran’s Program Research needed resources for difference disciplines

Utilize Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Filing, and Date Entry skills

Volunteer Training

All volunteers receive free training at a local office. In the volunteer orientation, you will learn about the following:

The goals and philosophy of hospice care The physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of death and dying Listening and communication skills Patient and family rights Professional boundaries Family relationships Grief and loss Spiritual and cultural diversity Patient confidentiality

The Qualities Of An Effective Hospice Volunteer

An effective hospice volunteer should have a compassionate and kind attitude toward their patients. They should strive to provide comfort and support for both the patient and their family members. They should be reliable, punctual, and prepared for the tasks assigned to them. Good communication skills are essential in this role, and hospice volunteers should have a good understanding of hospice services, as well as the hospice philosophy of care, taught during training. Finally, hospice volunteers should be non-judgmental and respectful towards patients and their families.

Additional qualities of an effective hospice volunteer include: 

Good listener Dependable Patient Flexible Empathetic and open Willing to serve, whether directly with families or behind the scenes

Volunteers and Graduate Interns that have network access can use email, the F: Drive and web-based
Office licensed products by going to portal.office.com. In addition, interns will have read-only access to
iConnect and to Homecare Homebase. Volunteers and interns do not receive any Compassus IT
equipment (laptop/tablet/phone).


Intern Responsibilities

1.  Communicate any issues or concerns to the preceptor.


2. Communicate any issues or concerns to the Volunteer Coordinator.


3. Complete a separate volunteer visit log for each patient visited and submit to Volunteer Coordinator
after each visit.


4.Track their own hours for the internship in accordance with their internship program guidelines.


5. An intern will not chart or write notes on the patient in lieu of the colleague whom they are shadowing.
