About the Program:

Lanzando Líderes is an after-school program for adolescents grades 9-12 in the South Philadelphia Latinx immigrant community. LL takes place in-person at Puentes de Salud in South Philadelphia one afternoon per week (Thursdays). This program was developed and piloted in 2017 and officially incorporated into Puentes de Salud’s education programming in the fall of 2018. In July 2020, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the program lost funding/staffing and remained active in a limited state. The fall of 2022 was its year of return to in-person programming which allowed for it to benefit from 1-1 tutoring/mentorship. Now, Lanzando Líderes strives to be a space where Latine youth can receive academic and post-secondary support, while also learning meaningful leadership and day-to-day skills in an environment that is culturally-responsive and celebrates their multilingualism and multiculturalism.

Position Description:

We seek Spanish-speaking, young adults (18-24 year olds) volunteers dedicated to creating comfortable bilingual learning spaces that are accessible to our high school students. In this role, the volunteer will work 1:1 or in a small student-to-volunteer ratio providing academic tutoring. The volunteer will also provide mentorship as our students navigate high school, personal goal setting, leadership, and exploration of post-secondary opportunities. NEW! In addition to academic support and mentorship, this role will require the volunteer to lead a lesson/workshop for our students once per semester on a topic of their choice. At LL, we believe in leading by example, therefore, we seek volunteers willing to grow their own leadership alongside our students. You will receive all necessary support from the Adolescent Education Supervisor to co-develop logistics and materials. Teaching/facilitating experience is not required!

Duties and Responsibilities:

Commit to weekly in-person sessions on Thursdays from 3:00-6:00pm. This time will include one hour of 1:1 or small student-to-volunteer ratio academic tutoring and mentoring and a one hour workshop led by a facilitator.Tutor 1:1 or in small groups: Help students with schoolwork and study/life skills.Mentor: Talk through goals, challenges, leadership, and life after high school.Workshop: Support the weekly facilitator.NEW! Design and lead your own hour-long workshop on a topic of your choice (as long as it's relevant to students interests) with support from the Adolescent Education SupervisorSupport with student supervision and classroom management using restorative practices during arrival to program, snack, group transitions, program activities, and dismissalCollaboratively prepare for programming and debrief with Adolescent Education Supervisor and other volunteers each weekYour voice matters!—Help shape the program with your ideas and feedback.

This fall, Puentes de Salud plan to offer the program, Pasaporte Cultural, once a week to students in 5th and 6th grade. This role will take place in person at Southwark Elementary School in South Philadelphia one afternoon per week.

Position Description:

We seek Spanish-speaking volunteers in order to better create bilingual learning spaces that are accessible to more students. In this role, the volunteer will work 1:1 or in a small student-to-volunteer ratio providing academic support through assisting students with different school material. Volunteers will also support the facilitator during workshops that may include: sports, arts and crafts, etc. Volunteers will also support the facilitator with “mini lessons”, all lessons are related to the country of the day. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Participate in after-school programming once a week from 3-6pm.Preview lesson plan and adequately prepare for activities each daySupport with supervision of students during snack, group transitions, bathroom breaks, workshop activities, and with children’s safetyAssist with classroom setup and support facilitator with teaching cultural lessons when neededParticipate in sports games and support students with arts & craftsClean up classroom & return materials to Puentes’ officeParticipate in debrief sessions after each day of programmingContribute to overall program evaluation and growth through on-going reflection and feedbackCommunicate with Education Supervisor if there are any student concerns

About the Program:

The Dance Workshops works with 1st-4th graders once a week at Southwark School. In these workshops, students will explore their cultural heritage and identities through dance. Students will develop their creative skills by learning and practicing Latin American dance techniques. 

Position Description:

We plan to offer this workshop series in-person. Appropriate COVID-19 precautions will be taken to align with School District guidelines. This role will take place in person at Southwark School in South Philadelphia one afternoon per week. We are seeking Spanish-speaking volunteers in order to better create bilingual learning spaces that are accessible to students. In this role, the volunteer will support the Puentes de Salud team in the implementation and facilitation of workshops, student arrival and dismissal, and other group processes that make up the program.  

Duties and Responsibilities

Participate in after-school programming once a week from 3-5:30pm.

Preview lesson plan and adequately prepare for activities each day

Support your team with setting up for each day’s planned activities  

Support with supervision of students during snack, group transitions, bathroom breaks, and workshop activities

Support with children’s safety and classroom management using restorative practices 

Support your team with clean up and student dismissal from program

Participate in debrief sessions after each day of programming

Contribute to overall program evaluation and growth through on-going reflection and feedback

Foster positive relationships with students and support on-going student voice and leadership
