Clearances for volunteering with minors
To be in compliance with PA state law and Drexel policies, any students volunteering directly with minors (people under age 18) need to receive a Pennsylvania Enhanced Background Certification (PEBC) prior to their volunteering. The PEBC is made up of three separate clearances. The HR Compliance Team in Drexel's office of Human Resources can provide information and resources related to the PEBC. You can visit their website with more information here.
The first step in the PEBC process, as detailed on the website linked above, is to complete the consent form - if you are doing the PEBC for an opportunity that you've found through this civic engagement database, be sure to select “OTHER” on this form as your reason for obtaining clearances and write “Need clearances for Lindy Center volunteer database opportunity. Will assume costs.”
Note that, if you are volunteering for personal reasons (as opposed to for a course requirement, organized service event, or other reason), there is a cost associated with the PEBC, specifically a $21.85 fee to obtain an FBI Criminal Background Check, that is paid for by the volunteer (you). If that cost is a barrier to you for any reason, the Lindy Center may be able to help you cover the cost. Email us at lindycenter@drexel.edu to let us know about your intended volunteer plans and that you cannot pay the fee and we will get back to you about covering it.
